Lab 4

ArcGIS is a very powerful software product by the Esri company. With this program people can create maps that contain different types of information about the same area – layers, which can be overlapped to create maps with many layers (layered cake);

ArcGIS makes it easy to create maps for a whole lot of purposes. It is really easy to include labels on the maps to make it easier for users to find specific objects very soon. The control over the font size, color and placement of the labels is very important and ArcGIS makes it very easy.

The interface of ArcGIS is very well organized. Including legends, direction and scales is very easy. I think that adding a background color and shade to maps makes them more attractive to users. In addition ArcGIS has a very powerful database management system, which allows to combine different tables of information about the same area.

At first when I opened the ArcGIS, I was confused because this program has so many tools and property dialog boxes for every item with so many options in them. But after the first part of the exercise I got accustomed to it. During this exercise I had some problems with ArcGIS. First of all it is very restricted on allowing to undo things, which makes it hard to fix errors. Also I had problems with dragging layers up or down and because of that I had to restart the ArcGIS a couple of times.
